Taxonomy: f. Plasmodidae
Animal: Plasmodium falciparum 2 04.jpg
Sites: Blood
Comment:
Plasmodium falciparum in thin film - note pre-segmented schizont and ring. Pre-segmented schizonts of P.falciarum are rarely seen in peripheral blood - almost fills non - (it almost fills the red cell and is compact with numerous irregular masses of chromatin) except in very heavy infections as schizogony occurs in the capillaries of internal organs rather than in the circulating blood. peripheral schizogony can occur in mild infections but usually in areas where immunity is high. The pigment is darker (black) than P. vivax (brown) and coaelesces early.
